Report from Otis

So this semester I am teaching 6 classes between UCR and Otis (yes everyone keeps telling me I am crazy, I know that), but I am most excited about the Otis Integrated Learning course: Creative Solutions to Living Through Autism. I spent the last two semesters designing this course so it is great to see it finally happening. The class is partnered with the Center for Autism and Related Disorders and students from all majors at Otis will develop projects relating to one of four topics: Children diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum, their Families, ABA Therapists, and the Public Awareness of Autism. Check out our Virtual Classroom from time to time to see what we are up to.

This month my video suite “we do not have to inherit everything they leave for us” will be presented in a group show of video art that opens tonight in Kansas City at the University of Missouri’s Gallery of Art. The show, called I-Dentity, was curated by Ashley McLean Emenegger and includes work SE Barnet, Nancy Buchanan, Zackary Drucker, Nabawia (Nabby) El-Soudani, Anthony Goicolea, Terrence Handscomb, Michele Jaquis, McCallum & Tarry, Natasa Prosenc, Miller Updegraff & Kaari Upson, Bruce Yonemoto. I know all of you on the east and west coasts will be flying there tonight so as not to miss the party. I wish I could too.

“The Last Time I Saw…”

The final version of “The Last Time I Saw…” is now available on the project’s website. The stories can be accessed either as a free PDF book, or as an interactive map.

“The Last Time I Saw…” is a Providence RI-specific book/art project that documents:

1. the last time area residents saw someone who means something to them, but who they no longer speak to; and
2. the exact locations where these meetings or sightings took place.

The project has gathered 30 or so stories by 20 or so residents. During 2007, we also led people on a story-telling walking tour of Providence, and distributed 300 free copies of the book.

(Please note: we still have some copies of the book available. If you’d like a free copy in exchange for postage, please email Tim at lasttimeisaw@yahoo.com . Thanks!)

Let's Change the Change or Change!

Alright! I’m going to go out there and VOTING FOR CHANGE this morning! Of course, that means I could be voting for McCain, or Hilary, or Romney, or Obama, or Huckabee (well, actually hell no).
The change all of these big party candidates are offering is like changing channels on the television, and what I am really looking for is more on the scale of turning off the TV and picking up a book, or better yet going outside.
Still, some of their messages are better than others, so hopefully this year we can at least make some change in which network we will all be watching. We will still get the same types of programs, the same major companies supporting them. Let’s say I want to vote for PBS… is there a candidate that fits that profile?

Not to overuse that crappy metaphor or anything.
