Today’s featured three letter bands—> ELO JET
Ablums are Out of the Blue and Get Born, respectively. Both rule.
Incidentally, ELO was on Jet records back then. And we all know abou the Wings connection I think.
I had the ELO album on vinyl, and had to go and get in on CD so I could listen at work. The album art on the original is incredible. If I can find a link to that, I will put one up. Or scan it myself.
A little about where I come from (the Northeast, not the Bronx though), and perhaps why I am not there anymore:
“Some people claim that American men have trouble expressing their emotions. Not at Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park. Toward the end of the game I attended in the Bronx, when it was clear the Yankees were going to win, the Yankee partisans turned to their brethren from the Bay State to let them know which part of the anatomy they resemble.
They started chanting a two-syllable word to summarize this conclusion. First they chanted it in reference to the Red Sox fans. Then they chanted it in reference to the Red Sox players. Then they chanted it in reference to nothing, just for the aesthetic satisfaction of it. Art for art’s sake.”

I have begun reading Salam Pax: The Clandestine Diary of an Ordinary Iraqi. Get it!!. It’s important. That’s all I can say. Or read it online at Where is Raed?
I still prefer reading analog.
I have been thinking lately that the concept of infinity is just a cop-out for not being able to find answers to scientific questions. I know that comes off as a bit naive perhaps, but the idea of infinity just doesn’t make sense. Think about it for a second. Can you even comprehend the idea? Anway, sure infinity helps out in mathematics alot, but does that really mean it is reflected in the physical world?
Well, now comes news that perhaps the universe is not infinite after all. And even stranger news, it may be shaped like a big ass soccer ball. Hmm. Go with it.

Last night we watched a couple of videos by the artsist Walid Ra’ad.. if you have never heard of him, you should go and hunt down his stuff. Try a nearby art school library (Michele was kind enough to order a couple for the Otis library). Or look up Video Data Bank and order em yourself. While I believe one of the videos we watched was more like a true documentary (Up To The South-with Jayce Salloum) – he often works from a place in between fact and fiction, adding his own narrative or point of view to a story already given the stamp of “truth” by history or mass media. He is tricky, brilliant, and not to be simply taken at face value. His work causes you to question what you are willing to believe, what you have been told is truth – and raises questions about the West’s portrayal and understanding of the Middle East and the people who live there or come from there.
Seriously. Genius.

What has the power to rescue a shitty, cloudy monday afternoon of drafting? NOFX!!!!!!!!!!
Ah… salvation.
October is a busy month for Rise Industries. Jeremy and I participated in a performance event Interchange last weekend. Check out images online if you missed it. Today I have a video being shown as part of The Best of Video 825 at MAK DAY. Also tonight at Gallery 825 I have a video/sculpture in the group exhibition Things d’ Art.
Here’s what else is coming up:
Oct 17 – Nov. 13: Women Trauma and Visual Expression at Woman Made Gallery in Chicago.
Oct 18: Now, and Now Again at The Wedge in the Woman’s Building in Los Angeles.
Oct 25: American Made at the LAtch in Los Angeles.
Michele’s video uncertainties will be shown in the Video 825 screening on Saturday, October 4 from 11:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. at MAK DAY Seen and Heard in LA.
The MAK Center for Art and Architecture opens its doors annually for a free community day highlighting the diverse selection of cultural offerings in the city. MAK Day 2003, Seen and Heard in L.A., focuses on alternative arts venues and their unique role in shaping the cultural life of Los Angeles. In light of current cutbacks in funding for the arts, it is imperative that the local community becomes aware of and supports the cultural resources in their neighborhood. Scheduled events include performances, screenings, children?s workshops, talks and readings from a variety of Los Angeles area arts organizations. Refreshments will be served throughout the day and visitors will be able to tour the famed Schindler House and view the current MAK Center exhibition, Schindler’s Paradise: Architectural Resistance.
A panel discussion inspired by the recently published volume, The Sons and Daughters of Los: Culture and Community in LA, will be the centerpiece of late afternoon activities. The book, published by Temple University Press, explores popular culture produced by everyday people and the arts organizations that support these efforts. Editor David James and other contributors to the book will be available for a book signing and discussion at the end of the day.
I didnt much like this story, except for this fucking great quote – “Wyclef Jean comes out and then there’s real applause. I wonder who he is. He announces that he is drinking cranberry juice and Grand Marnier. It’s like he’s trying to simultaneously cure and inflict a urinary tract infection.”
But you can read the whole thing anyway. Unless you are a writer, you might get bored like I did.
