On Saturday Jeremy was on a crazy itunes shopping spree of bad 80’s metal bands, Skid Row, Def Leppard, Warrant, Winger… Which sparked a joke about a hypothetical performance of dueling Hair Metal bands vs. Riot Grrrl bands. I searched off and on the rest of the day between Sleater Kinney, Excuse 17, Team Dresch, Heaven’s to Betsy, Le Tigre, Julie Ruin, Bratmobile, Joan Jett … and I kept wondering – who recorded the original version of “Cherry Bomb”? I finally came up with The Runaways – “the first all-female band to make a substantial impression on the public by playing loud, straight-up, guitar-driven rock & roll,” whose original members consisted of Joan Jett, Micki Steele (later of The Bangles) and Sandy West. Later versions of the group added others including Lita Ford. They began in 1975 and the perfect combination of “Jett’s punk and glam rock influences clashed with West and Ford’s love of straight-up hard rock and heavy metal” led to their demise in 1979. If this is where it all started, it is the essential band for our duel.

Retired S1Ws Recalled To Active Duty

“I got a letter from the P.E. the other day,” said James Bomb, 46, also a former S1W. “I opened it, and read it, and said they were suckers. They want me for their army or whatever? Picture me giving a damn—I said ‘Never.'”

“Then again, I could use the money,” Bomb added.

So why are we looking for Bon Jovi? Why is he wanted, wanted dead or alive? A spree of face rocking. Estimates vary as to how many faces have been targeted—some say 800,000, some say 1.2 million—but it is accepted as a fact that he has rocked every single face he has seen. Every one of them. We’re not even clear on a motive for this mass face rocking, although there are reports of Bon Jovi complaining of faces that “are so cold.” Will he stop at a million faces? How many will be enough? We can’t afford to find out.

I heard this song on the radio tonight. It was the highlight of my horrible, horrible drive home through inexplicably bumper to bumper traffic on the 10 freeway.

Native Bostonians Unable To Defend Land From Invading College Students

This headline over at the Onion the other day reminds me of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones song They Came to Boston.

they came to Boston on their vacation
they came, they saw, they annoyed me
they saw it all, what! Fanueil Hall! It’s best if they just avoid me
rented a car to see the sights they found the Hub confusing
looked for the Swan Boats In Mattapan well, I find that real amusing
I was here before they came. I’ll be here long after
don’t want to share, but it seems clear
that I’m gonna have to
they came to Boston for an education live in the dorms, join a frat
jam my bars and subway cars now, what the fuck is that?
spend year one having fun and causing aggravation
spending daddy’s cash on a toga bash when the hell’s graduation?
I was here before they came I’ll be here long after
don’t want to swear, but it seems clear
that I’m gonna have to
aww fuck
I was here before they came I’ll be here long after
don’t want to share, but it seems clear that I’m gonna have to
I was here before they came I’ll be here long after
don’t want to share, but it seems clear that I’m gonna have to
They came to Boston.

For those unfamiliar with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, their early albums on the Taang! label rule.

So, this website Retroblast is having a contest to design the best motivational poster (aka those cheesy business posters with a guy on a cliff that say STRIVE or some inspiring bullshit) based on retro video games.
So I made one that I personally feel is a real winner. If you dont get it, you probably didn’t have a Commodore 64 in the 80s.
So, go check it out, and the other entries. You can vote on them, but that does not affect who wins, I don’t think. They have a panel judging them.
I hung mine on the wall here at work, but no one got it. Oh well, I am the big dork here I guess.
