If only this map of Los Angeles public transit were reality.. or even on the boards. Would help with my traffic map shown below.

Compare with the disappointing reality of the subway system in LA, and the fact that a bus from downtown to the westside can take you up to two hours, and you will understand why we all drive here.

Though, soon I will test out biking the 18 miles to work. Not sure I can do that everyday though.

Highways around downtown Los Angeles, late Friday afternoon. Mmm, can’t wait to drive home. Please note, the only reason the I-10 freeway is not showing all red too, is that the traffic sensors are currently not working. This is why I don’t usually work Fridays.

My friend Sven, who is now in Spain, recently completed a 4×4 tour of Austraila – for which he shipped his Jeep all the way there from the US. On his site, XXXpedition, you can read all about the trip in installments. Also, he put up a few videos of rock-crawling at Coffs Coast, and used some tracks off my Crocket the Ironmonger, Ballpeen EP for the soundtrack.

“Not a wine in the world will go with salad,” Mr. McInerney said. “Which is why I basically don’t eat salad, except maybe at lunch sometimes. A salad for me is just a waste of an opportunity to have a good wine instead.”

“Next up was the first main course: squirrel pot pies in little ramekins, with tiny rabbit Wellingtons on the side. “Not just squirrel,” Mr. Rinella said, introducing the dish. “Brooklyn squirrel — the thinking man’s chicken.”

Great article
about Steven Rinella’s “The Scavenger’s Guide to Haute Cuisine”, and a little dinner party he had. The point of it all seems to be getting re-connected to our food sources, instead of just imagining it all come out of a giant food factory somewhere. So, why don’t you go hunt down some squirrely squirrels and cook ’em up?

For those of you out there who, like myself, are somewhat following the scandal surrounding the dismissal of eight U.S. Attorneys but do not know the whole story very well, Matthew Baldwin of Defective Yeti fame has put together a primer with the backstory and facts to date. Very handy.

We got a bit of a fire going on ourselves out in LA today – the fire is behind the Hollywood Hills, but from my roof it looks like downtown is burning. From the miniscule amount of rain we got this year (it hardly ever rains after March here) it’s going to be a long fire-season.

There is a fire today at 354 Pine Street in Pawtucket. A pretty serious one, too. We walked around thick snakes of water hose from surrounding fire plugs. (James was heard to remark, “they got hose from different area codes”). The whole building looks pretty lost, and all the windows have been blown out. Most of the remediation to the site has been done in the past few years, so at least there are no asbestos chunks flying around the city. I had heard that the owner has been trying to renovate the building, and familiar story, has had a hard time meeting fire codes. The fire sounds a bit suspicious to me, but we’ll see what turns up in the papers. Ah, Rhode Island…

Some great images of what it might look like if they had built Borif Iofan’s Palace of the Soviets – a giant wedding cake of a building with a huge Lenin sculpture on top. Rem Koolhass has written a bit about how the foundations, which were actually built, got turned into a giant indoor/outdoor swimming pool.
Le Corbusier also submitted a project to the design competition for this building. He didn’t win, but his design was a very influential early modernist project.
